Briarwood Ford Test Drive Event Could Raise $8,000 for Saline Schools Music Today

In the market for a new car? Ever wonder what it might feel like to step into a big Ford F-150 or rev the engine of a Ford Mustang? If you answered yes, then you’ll want to attend the Ford Drive One 4UR School test drive event at Harvest Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday.

Briarwood Ford will provide a full line-up of Ford vehicles for the test drives – from the Ford Fiesta to the Ford Bronco. For every test drive, Ford will donate $20 to the Saline Music Boosters – an organization that supports music programs throughout Saline Area Schools. Ford will donate up to $6,000 for 300 test drives. In addition, Ford will donate an additional $10 per test drive, for people who elect to take a second test drive if they choose to test a Ford Eco-Sport or Expedition.

“We have an opportunity to raise a total of $8,000 for the high school music program,” said Steve Whitener, owner of Briarwood Ford.

One of the nice things about the event, Whitener said, is that Ford’s sales people don’t pressure the drivers. The Briarwood Ford staff on site simply help drivers find the right vehicle and answer any questions they might have.

Whitener and Briarwood Ford are avid supporters of many community initiatives, in and out of the schools. But the music program holds a special place in Whitener’s heart. He met his wife, Sue, when they were in the marching band at college. Whitener was a musician for years before finding work in the automotive business. His children were involved in the Saline High School bands.

This event is a major event for the Saline Music Boosters.

This fundraiser is one of our main activities each year, so it's important to the Music Boosters overall fundraising goals,” said Chris Tressler, Treasurer for the Saline Music Boosters. “Fundraising supports all of the Saline music programs in grades 5-12, including band, orchestra, and choir. We help provide assistance for clinics, transportation to various festival activities, and other special enrichment activities for our large group of young musicians.

The annual test drive event has grown to include other activities. There is also a bake sale. Band parents will also have a music uniform clothing exchange.
