The Saline Area Schools district announced its calendar for the 2019-20 school year on April 4.
The new calendar outlines a school year that will begin before Labor Day. The change in the start prompted the district to reach out to families far earlier than normal.
"Unlike previous calendar releases, this one was released a year and a half ahead of time so that families have enough time this year to plan their summer in 2019," Saline Area Schools Superintendent Scot Graden said.
The 2018-19 school year will begin Sept. 4, on the Tuesday after Labor Day.
For 2019-20, classes will begin Aug. 26, 2019. During that first week back to school, there will be classes Aug. 26-29. School will break for a four-day Labor Day weekend, Aug. 30-Sept. 2.
Classes will resume Sept. 3.
Winter break will begin at the end of class Friday, Dec. 20, 2019, and resume Monday, Jan. 6, 2020. Spring break begins at the end fo class Friday, March 27, 2020 and classes resume Monday, April 6, 2020.
Open houses at Harvest, Pleasant Ridge, Woodland Meadows and Heritage elementary schools will happen Aug. 21, 2019.
Saline Area Schools will announce the rest of the schedule at a later date.
Saline Area Schools applied for and received a waiver from the Michigan Department of Education to begin school before Labor Day. School officials believe the earlier start will be educationally beneficial to students. The new schedule will better align with exams, according to district officials. Some teachers believe students are less likely to absorb lessons after Memorial Day.
