Six SHS Juniors placed 7th out of 64 teams from around the world at the 2019 Destination Imagination (DI) Global Finals Competition in Kansas City, MO.  Global Finals is the culminating event of every DI season. Over 8,000 students from more than 15 different countries were in attendance for four days celebrating creativity.  In DI, students work together in teams to create a solution to one of six competitive Challenges: Technical, Scientific, Fine Arts, Improvisational, Engineering or Service Learning.

“The Zurfendurphs” participated in and provided a solution in the Scientific category: Medical Mystery. They researched the human brain and displayed how deficiencies in certain areas of the brain cause specific symptoms throughout the body. They were also challenged to show this cause/effect using double vision (shown from two perspectives at the same time). Collectively, they used each team member’s strengths to build, design, program, create and perform a very informative and engaging skit – complete with a model replica of the brain, wired with lights to show what areas were being altered.

The team participated in the Global Finals festivities including competing in the DI Tournament, pin trading, a prop design showcase, viewing many other team’s solutions, participating in international events, and more.

The six team members are involved in a variety of clubs and sports at Saline High School in addition to DI. Team members participate in track, hockey, Poetry Out Loud, dance, baseball, lacrosse, National Honor Society, Special Olympics coach/volunteer, and several also have a part-time job. The skills learned and practiced in DI help them in various situations – teamwork and problem-solving skills are especially prevalent as they work through their DI challenges and solutions.
