On Saturday, March 2, Saline Middle School hosted an innovative, fun-filled tournament called Destination Imagination (DI). After months of preparation, 24 student teams from more than eight Region 2 schools presented their creative solutions to a number of mind-bending STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) challenges.
Destination Imagination is an international, project-based educational program that encourages innovation, teamwork and creative problem solving. Students choose one of seven different open-ended DI challenges and work together in teams to plan, create and present their solution.
Teams competed by grade level groups Rising Stars (K-3), Elementary Level (4,5), Middle Level 6-8) and Senior Level (9-12) in Instant Challenges - timed challenges for the teams to compete in on the spot and prepared Team Challenges in the following categories: On Target, Medical Mystery, Game On, Head’s Up (Improv), Monster Effects and Escape Artists.
In addition to competing, teams enjoyed watching other team’s presentations, trading goods and buttons and playing in the game area.
Saline DI will be sending 8 teams to the Michigan Destination Imagination State Tournament at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, on April 13, 2019.
"I am proud of all of our students. I have so much gratitude and appreciation for the the Saline Board and Michigan Creativity Association (MiCA)’s putting together the Regional Tournament." said Coach Nichole Dell’Orco, Team Manager of The Fluffy Kittens. “Everything was very organized and ran smoothly. I especially loved watching the kids play giant chess and checkers in the game area in between events.”
"It’s great to compete and hang with your friends all day," said team member Owen Bloch. “I really liked the games area and the judges were really nice. This was our first time doing Improv and it was really fun.”
These events are open to the public, and visitors and media are encouraged to attend.
