On April 21 students from the South and West Washtenaw Consortium culinary arts program at Saline High School competed at the SkillsUSA State Competition. Students competed in Commercial Baking and Culinary Arts. The three hour competition tested students ability to produce products according to industry standards and and adhere to sanitation procedures.
Emma Keeler, a baking student from Milan earned a gold medal in commercial baking. She produced seven products; a decorated cake, cookies, rolls, braided bread, pie, Danish and sweet rolls and scored first place among 18 other competitors. Emma will go on to compete at the national competition in Louisville, Ky June 25-30.
Austin Hannah, a senior from Saline High School earned a bronze medal for his culinary dish. He competed against 16 other students and placed third. His meal included airline chicken breast in a mushroom ragu, rice pilaf, and vegetable medley.
