Saline improved to 6-0 in the SEC Red by sweeping Monroe as varsity baseball action continued this week.
Monday, Saline hosted a doubleheader at Saline, winning 7-1 and 6-1. Wednesday, Saline traveled to Monroe and came away with an 11-1 victory.
Junior CF Alex Morrison went 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, three RBI and two runs to lead Saline. Noah Nelson (2-for-3, double, two stolen bases, two runs), Cam Daniels (2-for-2, double, two walks, one run, one RBI), and Aidan Corrigan (2-for-4, two runs) also had two hits each. Logan Evans also doubled. Jack O’Keefe drove in two runs.
Lefty Ryan Steinhauer started and won, going five shutout innings. Steinhauer allowed four hits and walked none while striking out four. Mason Glennnie pitched an inning of relief, giving up a run on a hit and walk, while striking out one.
Saline scored six runs in the first and never looked back.
On Monday, in the opening game, Lance Blaszak allowed a run in the first inning and then shut down Monroe the rest of the way as Saline won, 7-1. Blaszak went 6 2/3 innings allowing one run on four hits and three walks. Blaszak struck out six. Jack Plumley got the final out of the game for Saline.
Monroe manufactured a run in the top of the first with a walk, single, sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly. Blaszak slammed the door on Monroe’s hitters after that. Saline got on the board in the the top of the third. With two out, Morrison walked and stole second. He scored on a single to left by Evans. Saline took a 3-1 lead in the fourth. With one out, Brad Baldus reached on an error. With two out, Baldus stole second and then scored on a single by Bobby Butler. Nelson singled to score Butler. Saline led 3-1.
Saline took advantage of two Monroe errors to add to their lead in the fifth. Evans reached on an error in the infield. Arbaugh reached on another infield error. Cam Daniels drove in a run with a hard-hit drive to left. Saline added three more runs in the seventh. With one out, Nelson singled to left. He stole second. Corrigan was hit by a pitch. Both advanced on a double steal. With two out, Evans doubled to center, scoring two runs. Aidan Arbaugh singled to score Kolton Malinczak, who was a courtesy runner.
Evans finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Nelson was 2-for-4 with an RBI, run four stolen bases. Saline stole eight bases.
Saline won the nightcap, 6-1, using a four-run third inning to pull away.
Jacob Whitley started and won. In five innings work, Whitley allowed one unearned run on two hits and two walks. He struck out four. Nate Watson pitched a scoreless, hitless inning of relief, striking out one.
Nelson went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Saline stole six bases in the game. Brad Baldus went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Alex Morrison went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
