Early in the SEC Red season, Saline’s varsity girls basketball team are proving to be road warriors.
Saline defeated Monroe 59-46 in the Trojans’ gym, Tuesday.
The Trojans took a six-point lead in the third quarter, but Maddy Welch sparked a late run to propel Saline to victory. Saline improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the SEC Red.
Welch scored seven of her 10 points in the fourth quarter as Saline outscored Monroe 19-11 in the final frame to pull away. Welch made a three-point shot and two field goals.
Ella Stemmer scored five of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter. She also grabbed five rebounds. Kelsey Alexander had four of her six points in the fourth. Alexander also had four steals. Brooke Bauer also scored 10 points, going 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Bauer also had seven rebounds. Nicole Sweetland hit two three-pointers and scored nine points. Erin Reilly also scored six points and grabbed six rebounds. Leeya Lawson and Liz Sekerak also scored two points apiece.
The Hornets continue to play without senior Asia Lindsey and sophomore Emily Eitzman.
