Sophomore Madi Wood led Saline to a second-place finish at the SEC Red final jamboree at Hudson Mills Metropark Thursday. Saline finished with 58 points, holding off a charge from Bedford (62 points) Pioneer, led by Zofia Dudek, won the meet with 21 points. Dudek completed the 5K course in 17:09.4.
Wood's time of 18:03.4 was good for second place. It the second fastest time of her career and the fastest she's ever run at an SEC Jamboree. She finished third at the second jamboree and first jamboree. Wood and Pioneer sophomore Sarah Forsyth had a great race for second place.
"It was going back and forth for us the entire race. When we entered around the 600, I took it up the hill," Wood said. Wood also held off a late challenge from Forsyth on the straightaway.
Saline sophomore Madison Stern was 10th in 19:27.7. Nicole Dillmann (12th, 19:41.9), Claire Endres (15th, 19:47.2) and Ella Woehlke (19th, 20:15) also finished in the scoring for Saline.
Katelyn Szanfranski (20th, 20:28.9) and Haley Greene (23rd, 20:51.8) also ran for the Hornets.
Wood and the Hornets turn their attention to next week's regional.
Asked about her goals for the rest of the season, Wood said he's aiming at a spot on the all-state podium. As a freshman, she just missed making all-state.
Wood's time on Thursday was more than 40 seconds faster than her run at MIS last year - so she's definitely on her way.
