Saline avenged its state championship game loss to Huron with a 2-0 victory over the River Rats in varsity field hockey action at Hornet Stadium Wednesday.
Erin Reilly and Bridget Skelly scored goals while goalie Abby Kleinschmidt recorded the shutout to lift Saline to what might be the program's inaugural victory over Huron.
Skelly opened the scoring early in the game on a scramble in front of the goal. Tenley Schrzan picked up the assist.
Later in the half, the Hornets scored again. Reilly took a pass from Maya Prasad, cut to the middle, found a seam and then fired a booming shot into the goal for the 2-0 lead.
Saline continued to press. At one point, a sure goal was denied when it struck a Huron player's foot as she stood in front of her goal. Skelly was awarded a penalty stroke but she fired a low shot just wide of the target.
The Hornets spent much of the second half on their heels. Saline's forward struggled to break the Huron defense, leading to many turnovers and counterattacks. For the most part, the Hornets held the River Rats to the outside. But Kleinschmidt did have to make saves on a few offensive flurries.
Saline improved to 4-0-2 in Division 1 play and 6-0-2 overall. The Hornets, along with Pioneer and Dexter, are the only undefeated teams in Division 1. Huron fell to 2-3 in Division 1.
The Saline Post 3 Stars.

- Bridget Skelly - Scored a goal. Came inches from another.
- Abby Kleinschmidt - The aggressive goalie stopped all five shots and prevented Huron from narrowing the gap in the second half.
