Livingston County soccer teams haven’t been kind to the Saline Varsity girls soccer team so far this year.
Brighton scored on a breakaway with 2:35 to play in the second half as Brighton defeated Saline, 1-0. Saline fell to 0-2. The Hornets lost the season opener to Hartland.
The game was played in cold, windy conditions at Hornet Stadium. It was an evenly-played match for most of the first 50 minutes, but Brighton generated several dangerous chances as the second half went on. Saline goalie Annika Udrys made several fantastic saves to keep the Hornets in the game.
With About 22 minutes to play, a Bulldog came flying up the right wing. Udryss charged from the goal and stopped a high shot – perhaps out of self-preservation. About five minutes later she made a stop on a well-executed two-on-one. After a corner kick, Udrys made a diving stop to deflect a ball out of bounds in front of a looming Bulldog. Later in the game, Udrys rushed out of her goal to stop a Bulldog streaking up the left side.
Despite having multiple corner kicks, the Hornets struggled to generate quality scoring chances. Still, the Hornets continued to press. Saline players were tripped and tackled on two consecutive possessions without penalty before Brighton turned the ball up the field to score on what amounted to a breakaway.
Saline hosts Monroe Tuesday night.
