 01/25/2017 - 01:53
Glory Ford scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had four blocks for Saline.

Abbey Bowen scored 16 points and Glory Ford scored a career-high 15 points as Saline (8-4) defeated Ypsilanti-Lincoln, 59-50, in varsity girls basketball action at Saline High School Tuesday. Sydney Jarvela added 12 points.

After giving up 17 points in the second quarter, the Hornets were down 27-25 at halftime.

The Hornets opened the third quarter with a 13-point run to take over the game.

“Words were said at halftime and the girls took it to heart and came out and played with more energy and more focus,” Saline coach Jeff Waltz said.

Waltz wasn’t happy with the girls’ defensive effort in the first half. But he’s glad the girls were able to pick up the win while learning a lesson about intensity.

“I think we learned tonight that it doesn’t matter who you’re playing, if you don’t come out and give 100 percent, things aren’t going to go well,” Waltz said.

Bowen scored six points in the first quarter as Saline built a 13-10 lead.

Lake McKenzie scored six of her 17 points for the Railsplitters in the second quarter. Lincoln scored 17 points to go up 27-25. Sydney Jarvela scored six points of her 12 points in the second quarter to keep the Hornets in the game.

The Hornets took over in the third quarter.

“At halftime we came into the room and talked about what we needed to do to stop number 11 (McKenzie). She was doing pretty well. We just changed. We got more intense and we had fun,” said Ford, who scored seven of Saline’s 21 points in the third quarter.

Bowen scored five points during the quarter. When the quarter was over, Saline led 46-37.

Huron stayed close and got within five points late in the game before Asia Lindsey put them away with a couple of free throws. Then Ford came up with a block and set up Bowen for a layup in the game’s final moments.

Saline also got offense from Sydney Jarvela (six points on three strong moves to the basket), Shannon Reilly (five points) and Brooke Bauer (four points).

The girls have been working on free throws recently and it showed. Saline went 13-for-15 from the line. Lindsey was 5-for-6 and Ford was 5-for-5.

Saline visits Pioneer Friday. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
