Sometimes, a football team gets an unexpected transfer student that can give a team a huge boost.
Sometimes, that surprise was right under your nose.
Senior Cade Gilless isn’t exactly a stranger to Saline football. But he took his junior year off to focus on wrestling. When Gilless decided he needed football back in his life, the Hornets weren’t sure what they were getting.
They know now.
Gilless has been the featured running back in the Saline offense. He’s slippey. He’s got good speed. And he’s got toughness.
“I think what surprised us about Cade is the way he can beat guys on the outside,” coach Joe Palka said.
Last week was one of the few times Gilless didn’t score. But he set up Saline’s second TD with a great run up the middle. Somehow, Gilless emerged from a scrum on his feet - showing that power and strength - and then he used that quickness to go another 35 yards before being pushed out of bounds inside the 10.
