On a cold and wet day at Lake Erie Metropark, the Saline cross country team ran a smart, conservative race and took second place to qualify for next week’s state meet at Michigan International Speedway.
Senior Simon Pfeiffer and junior William Minnette paced Saline to the second place finish. The Hornets finished with 62 points. Ann Arbor Pioneer won the regional with 29 points. Bedford, with 140 points, also qualified for the state meet.
Pfeiffer was once again the fastest Hornet. He finished third in 16:24.5 seconds – two seconds faster than Minnette. The pair ran most of the race side-by-side, in Wetzel-Hall fashion.
“We just raced how we always do. We started pretty conservatively. We didn’t want to do anything too crazy. We started pretty slowly and then just kind of amped it up,” Pfeiffer said. “Coach Spina instills in us that we’ve got to race tough every day, no matter the conditions.”
Pfeiffer and Minnette earned all region honors.
Junior Christopher Clisham (17th, 17:11.2), junior Cole Trese (18th, 17:11.5) and senior Jevin Nishioka (20th, 17:16.9) contributed to the Hornet scoring.
Sophomore Emmett Berryhill (25th, 17:29) and senior William Downey (41st, 18:03) also ran for the Hornets.
