The Saline varsity combined some power hitting with a two-hit, one-run, five-strike-out pitching gem by senior Danielle Cobello, to crush the Jackson Vikings, 17-1. The victory raises the team’s season record to 9-8, Jackson’s record dropped to 3-21.
The Hornets jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning when they sent nine batters to the plate. The inning started with senior Ashley Heren drawing a walk. She immediately stole second. Sophomore Elaina Walker then walked and both runners advanced on an infield single by senior Alexandra Pace.
On a one out, 1-1 pitch, junior Emma Schwartzenberger smashed a grand slam home run over the left field fence to clear the bases. 4-0 at the end of one.
The Hornets added another run in the second on a hit by Heren. She took second as Walker reached first a Viking error. A two-out single by Schwartzenberger brought Heren home, 5-1 Saline at the end of two.
It was the Hornets’ third inning that put the game out of reach. Saline sent 13 batters to the plate and scored ten runs. The nine-run inning featured the second grand slam home run of the game by senior Kelsey Alexander.
After all the damage had been done by the Hornet bats in the bottom half of the third, Saline led 14-1.
In the Hornets’ half of the fourth inning, Pace got things started with a one out single to center. Schwartzenberger then drew a two out walk and then sophomore Abigail Kleinschmidt hit a walk-off three run home run to end the game, giving the Hornets a 17-1 victory.
With the win, the lady Hornets’ record goes to 9-8 on the season. The team will get back into action on Friday when they will play in a tournament at Veterans Memorial Park. They are scheduled to play games at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday and 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday. All games will be played at Vets Park. Vets Park is located at the corner of Maple and Dexter in Ann Arbor.
