The Saline girls varsity tennis team qualified for the state tournament in the first time in eight years.

The magic number to qualify was 18 points, and that’s exactly what the Hornets tallied. The finals take place June 1-2 in Midland. The team is rewarded one point for each match won.

In singles, Jenny Wolf led the way. Playing in the fourth flight, Wolf went all the way to the championship match. Andrea Teofilovic, Madison Caldwell and Carly Hiner competed in singles.

In doubles, two groups went to the finals. Megan Foley and Saige Jost lost in the second flight championship while Lindsey Barba and Brooke Engelhardt lost in the fourth flight championship. The teams of Aly Heider and Zoe Ellsworth and Nina Ellsworth and Sarah Roberts also competed for Saline.

Before the Hornets advance to the state championship, Saline will finish its SEC season, including the SEC meet. The Hornets are in contention for the league title.
