Saline’s stellar water polo team celebrated senior night by trouncing Seaholm, 22-1, in the season’s final regular season contest.

Senior Maddy Murphy scored five of her six goals in the first quarter as Saline took an early 11-0 lead. Senior Gillian Cain scored three goals. Cassie Anderson Lisa Gross, Sam Fitch, Eleanor Smith, and Jen Green each scored a pair of goals. Hope Smith, Lauryn Kruse, and Annika Olsen scored for Saline.

Gross and Fitch each had five steals for the Hornets.

Saline honored seniors Maddy Murphy, Gillian Cain, Alyssa Deal, Samantha Fitch, Jennifer Green, Lisa Gross, Audra Shull and Lara Hijazi prior to the contest.

“Five of these girls have played with Saline water polo for all four years, and Lisa Gross was a great athlete when she joined the program a couple years ago. These seniors are why we’re having such a great season this year,” coach Katie Neidermire said. “They’ve listened to their coach, played a lot and learned a lot. They understand the game. They know our game plan and they’ve experienced a lot, so they can adapt to the game.”

Saline finished the regular season with a 19-3 record. They were 7-0 in district play. Now they prepare for the post-season, which begins Friday at Huron, host of Saline’s district tournament. Saline opens with a 4 p.m. game against Walled Lake. A victory guarantees a trip to the regional tournament. But Saline wants to win the tournament and go into regionals as a top seed.

To do that, they’ll need to beat Walled Lake and then beat two team’s Saturday, including a potential rematch against Huron, who ended Saline’s 17-game win streak last week.

“We’d love a chance to face Huron. They’re a great team. But we’re not going to miss the net more than a dozen times like we did last time we played,” Neidermire said.
