New Jobs, Governor? Really?

There's lots of coverage in the media today about Detroit Manufacturing Systems and the 572 jobs that will be created in Detroit.

Faurecia, the company which purchased the Ford automotive components business in Saline, and Rush Group, have joined forces to create the company.

The move has been lauded by everyone from UAW President Jimmy Settles to Governor Rick Snyder.

Here's what Gov. Snyder tweeted;

Detroit Manufacturing Systems is bringing 572 jobs, $29.2 million in investment to Michigan. Congrats on the grand opening!

— Rick Snyder (@onetoughnerd) August 22, 2012

Bringing to 572 jobs to Michigan? Many of these jobs were already in Michigan. They were in Saline. The state government helped transfer these jobs from Saline to Detroit with $4 million in tax credits.

It's terrific to see investment and jobs in Detroit. It might just be that the sale of the ACH plant doesn't happen without this development in Detroit. And, for all we know, without this deal, the Saline plant might have been shuttered.

At the same time, the backslapping and congratulations won't be greeted with celebration in Saline, which will lose 1,000 jobs over the next four years.
