Saline Schools Seeks Community's Help to Shape World Languages Plan
The Saline Area Schools is moving forward with a plan to bring world language to elementary schools beginning in the 2013-14 school year. And the district is looking for the community's help to shape that plan.
"We are now seeking a number of community members to serve on a committee to help us develop an articulated vision and plan for this work," said Steve Laatsch, Saline's Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services.
The committee will consist of a mix of administrators, teachers, foundation members, community members and local university representatives and will meet approximately six times in the evening, beginning in late November.

Anyone interested is asked to fill out an online application (click here) by Oct. 30. After this date, the subcommittee will review the applications. People will be contacted the week of Nov. 5 about their application.
This year, the Foundation for Saline Area Schools is raising $75,000 in support of the Love of Language initiative. Saline Area Schools plans to bring a foreign language offering to it elementary schools for 2013-14. The program would be expanded to Heritage Elementary and into sixth grade at Saline Middle School. Students are already learning foreign languages in grades 7-12.
Money raised will help purchase course materials, train staff and purchase software and hardware that will aid instruction.
The aim of the expansion of world languages is to give students an edge in the global economy. School officials also say that learning a foreign language helps student achievement in other areas. To learn more, click here.
