Saline Girls Capture Portage Race
The Saline High School girls cross country team captured first place in another big meet at Saturday’s Portage Invitation, held at Portage West Middle School.
Saline finished with 41 points, a great score for a 33-team field. The second place team finished with 141 points. Three Hornets finished in the top five. The five scoring Hornets finished in the top 15. Saline’s top seven finished in the top 18 of the 228-girl Division 1 race. For the first time in team history, all seven Hornet runners finished under 19 minutes.
Sophomore Lauren Green, who continues to get stronger as the season goes on, set an all-time record, finishing the race in 18:22. She was followed in by junior Elianna Shwayder, who was fourth in 18:30.6. Freshman Gillian Walter finished fifth in 18:35.0. Senior Alyssa Cummings was 13th in 18:44.8. Sophomore Abby Rentschler was 15th in 18:49.7. Junior Gloria Park was 17th in 18:50.7. Hannah Cummings was 18th in 18:51.4.
Saline competes in the River Rat Open Pre-region Friday at Willow Metropark. The boys run at 4:30 p.m. and girls run at 5 p.m.
