White, Kellstrom Lead Hornets to SEC Championship

Emily White battled through injury and freshman Samantha Kellstrom emerged as one of the area’s top golfers as Saline won its fourth straight SEC golf tournament Monday at the Lenawee Country Club in Adrian.

After losing Friday to Pioneer, Saline needed Monday’s victory to capture the SEC Red title. Saline was also awarded the inaugural SEC Conference Tournament Championship, which is awarded to the best of the SEC’s 11 teams playing in both divisions.

Saline trumped Pioneer by eight strokes, 360-368.

"This was exciting for the team to come back today after a bad match at Tecumseh,” French said. “It was a team goal to win the conference and the girls accomplished that today.”

Bedford (401), Monroe (411), Huron (420) and Skyline (429) rounded out the division.

Emily White, match medalist in each of her SEC outings this year, battled through a rib injury that restricted her swing and still managed an SEC-best 81.

She played really well until the last couple of holes despite a severe rib injury which restricted her swing. She had a gutty performance today,” coach Betsy French said.

Freshman Samantha Kellstrom finished her first SEC season as tournament runner up. She shot an 86 in windy conditions on the difficult, hilly course. Lauren Rasmussen continued her late-season surge with a 96. Stacy Cruz finished with a 97.

White made the SEC Red All Conference Team for the third straight season. Kellstrom also earned all-conference honors as a rookie.

The Hornets now focus on the regional, which takes place Oct. 10 at Pineview Golf Course.

“There is still a lot of practice needed to bring scores down to top state team levels," French said.
