Saline Falls to Pioneer, Looks for Revenge In Monday's SEC Tournament
Saline’s girls’ golf team lost their first SEC match of the season Friday.
In a battle of undefeated teams at Hantz Golf Club in Tecumseh, Pioneer edged Saline, 172-177. Tecumseh wasn’t far back, at 180.
Saline’s Emily White continued her undefeated league season and was match medalist. She shot a 36 that included two bogeys and two birdies. Freshman Samantha Kellstrom shot a four-over-part 40 to tie for second with Tecumseh’s Paige Watkins. Lauren Rasmussen shot a 50 and Stacy Cruze shot a 51.
Pioneer golfers Sloane Supica, Alexandra Lee and Lizzie Fichera each shot a 42, with Hyunji Kim shooting a 46 and Rachel Hunter and Hannah Lee shooting a 47.
Saline coach Betsy French was encouraged by the play of White and Kellstrom.
“ "It is encouraging to have Samantha who has been hitting well, score well today. Emily continues her strong play. Today was a setback for the team but I look to the team to rebound and play well on Monday," French said.
Saline plays in the SEC Tournament at Lenawee Country Club Monday. With double the points available at the tournament, Saline can capture the league championship by winning the tournament.
Saline Wins Tri-Match
At Pineview Golf Course Thursday, Saline (169) defeated Lincoln (206) and Ypsilanti (233).
White was match medalist with one-over-par 37. She fired a birdie and two bogeys.
"Emily played well. She was frustrated with missed putts but scored well in spite of them. We were glad to get a look at the course where our Regional will be played," said coach French.
Rasmussen shot a 43, another personal best. Cruze (44) and Kellstrom (45) completed Saline’s scoring.
Saline junior varsity shot a 201 to lose to Lincoln by a stroke at the Little Pines Golf. The Hornets were led by Rebecca Smith's 48, followed closely by Madison Evans at 49, Amanda Dooley at 51 and Frannie Fenelon at 53. Morgan Filsinger had a 54.
