Rentschler Runs 3rd Fastest Time in Saline History, Hornets Second at Spartan Meet

In what might have been a preview of the state meet, the Saline girls’ cross country team finished second to Grosse Pointe South in the Spartan Invitational, held Friday at East Lansing.

The Hornets ran their fastest times ever at the Spartan Invitational, according to coach Mike Smith. And Friday’s times were comparable to last year’s state meet times.

Saline finished with 131 points, 45 points behind Grosse Pointe South, and 65 points ahead of the third place team from Northville. Saline was second to Grosse Pointe South at last year’s state meet.

Abby Rentschler bested her all-time best by 29 seconds and finished eighth in 18:13, which is the third fastest time ever run by a Saline girl (behind Eileen Creutz, 17:41 and Alex Leptich (17:54). Each of Saline’s top seven girls ran season-best or all-time best times.

Elianna Shwayder was 22nd in 18:47. Lauren Green  was 32nd in 18:59. Gloria Park was 34th in 19:01. Gillian Walter finished 35th in 19:04. Alyssa Commings (45th, 19:18) and Hannah Cummings (47th, 19:20) rounded out Saline’s top seven. Saline’s top seven placed in the top 47 out of 255 runners from 36 schools.
