Hornets Show Improvement in 2nd Outing

The Saline girls’ golf team opened the season by competing against some of the state’s top teams at two invitational tournaments.

On Monday, Saline placed 10th out of the 24 teams competing at the Birmingham Seaholm Invitational at Forest Lake Country Club. The event was won by Plymouth.

Emily White led the team with a score of 81 to finish seventh. Freshman Samantha Kellstrom and Junior Stacy Cruz finished with 101. Captain Lauren Rasmussen shot a 103. Saline finished with a total score of 386.

“The team had difficulty with the elevated, large, fast, sloping greens,” said coach Betsy French.

Saline’s golfers rebounded Thursday at the Highlands Shooutout at Heather Highlands Golf Club, dropping 31 strokes to finish with a 355. Saline was seventh of 24 teams. Plymouth won the event.

White dropped three strokes to finish seventh and lead the Hornets. Kellstrom continued her strong play with a 89. Captain Louisa Antonelli shot a 93. Cruz completed the scoring with a 95.

“There was improvement in the scoring but much work is needed for the Hornets to move up to the level of the state's top teams,” French said. “Seeing the best is motivating the team to practice hard and continue working on the scoring areas- putting and chipping.”
