For one more year, at least, the old Houghton School property will serve as a convenient parking lot for Saline Celtic Festival visitors.

The Saline Celtic Festival kicks off Friday with Pub Night, 5 p.m. to midnight, at Mill Pond Park. The gates open at 5 p.m., and admission is $5.

The November Saline City Council election is shaping up to be competitive.

It was already a sad day. A few weeks ago, Carlos Melendez was driving to Detroit with a van full of people for the burial of his mother. On the way, he realized that he did not have the cash that he had collected from his brothers and sisters to pay for the funeral.

“I’m driving down and then I start thinking in my mind, what did I do with that money,” Melendez said. “I wasn’t about to say anything to anybody. I’d be in big trouble.”

Voted Current Magazine’s “Best Acoustic Band in South Eastern Michigan,” the Ann-Arbor based band Dragon Wagon will perform at Thursday's free Saline Summer Music Series concert, co-sponsored by the Saline Celtic Festival, 7 to 9 p.m., in downtown Saline.
