Local news needs the support of readers.
It's asking too much of advertisers to foot the entire bill for news operations around the country. If you get down to the nitty gritty of it, do you want a news outfit that works for advertisers or news outfit that works for readers?
The news business has changed since I arrived in Saline with Patch.com in 2010. The Saline Reporter is gone. AnnArbor.com reverted to the Ann Arbor News but did not revert to providing local news coverage. The Saline Eagle came and went. The Saline Post twice tried to provide a newspaper, but couldn't find the formula. The Sun Times entered the market and provides bare-bones coverage.
The Saline Post aims to stay on top of what's happening and keep the community informed. But we need to be better.
We need a better web server that doesn't crash when big news happens. We need more reporting. We need copy editing.
It won't happen with advertising dollars only. If local news matters to you, consider a contribution of $5/month.
