Family members volunteer for food delivery at Saline Area Social Service Monday.

The demand for service is rising at Saline Area Social Service as the agency begins its third week of distributing food to Saline Area Schools families.

Anne Cummings, Executive Director of Saline Area Social Service, said the number of people using the service is about twice what it was a week ago and perhaps four or five times the normal load.

Saline Area Social Service provides a food pantry and other services for Saline area residents in need. For the last two weeks, the agency has also been tasked with providing food for Saline Area Schools students who typically use the school district's free and reduced lunch program. Additionally, more and more local residents have been laid off from their jobs.

People who need assistance should visit from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday or from 10 a.m.  to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Donations can be delivered during those hours from 10 a.m. to noon, Friday and Saturday.

Saline Area Social Service is located at 224 W. Michigan Ave.
