 11/09/2017 - 23:51

The public is invited to the 13th Annual New Horizons Band Veterans Tribute Concert at 4 p.m., Sunday, at Saline Middle School.

There is free admission to the concert which is sponsored by the Washtenaw County Council of Veterans.

Under the direction of the new director, Richard Schoenfeldt, the Saline New Horizons Band will present a stirring patriotic tribute to American veterans, with songs from throughout our nation’s history.

Two guest soloists will highlight the concert. Retired Coast Guard Commander David Smith will sing the Navy Hymn (“The Eternal Father”). Mr. Smith graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1960 and served for 21 years before retiring at the rank of Commander. A prominent member of the noted male chorus, Measure for Measure, Commander Smith is an outstanding baritone and a true American patriot.

Dr. Joseph Labuta, who was the founder and long time director of the Band, will be the featured trumpet soloist in his jazz rendition of the war time soldier favorite “Embraceable You.” Before moving to Saline, Dr. Labuta was the Professor of Conducting at Wayne State University for 30 years.

Master of Ceremonies is The Honorable Donald Shelton.
