Travis Pointe Country Club, the proud host of the LPGA Volvik Championship, is celebrating four decades of unforgettable golf, tennis, swim and social activities. In honor of this milestone, the Club will be hosting a 40th Anniversary Party for its members on Saturday, September 30th, to commemorate the club’s beginning and to celebrate the journey over the past 40 years. This event will feature dueling pianos, culinary feasts and specific segments of the Club’s history from 1977 - 2017.
Before Travis Pointe Country Club was built, this beautiful area was known as Omega Farms. Land-owners Connie and Cliff Simmons had a vision of developing one of the premier country clubs in Michigan, and in June of 1976, construction began. The clubhouse architect, Bill Farrand, was also the first President, having been appointed by the Simmons to oversee their vision. Bill Farrand is still an active member at the club along with 57 other original members.
Some of the ponds came from removing the dirt and using it to give the appearance the clubhouse was built on a hill. Others were dug to create the terrain for the golf course and the roads. Even throughout the occasional interior renovations, the original structure of the building has been preserved and has changed very little since its completion.
In September 1977, the Clubhouse opened, however, the Club held its first Men’s Invitational on 9 holes the year before its completion. “The only grass covering the course was the grass on the tees and on the green. Dirt and rocks of all sizes covered the fairway and rough”, stated the Club’s Cofounder, David Simmons. The course was constructed by nationally well-respected golf course architect, Bill Newcomb. This signature golf course is now one of the most beautiful in the state.
The course, ranging from 5,264 yards to 7,326 yards, is suitable for all skill levels. The Club has hosted countless championship tournaments since the course's opening in 1977. The Club is honored to be the host course for the LPGA Volvik Championship and is looking forward to this year’s tournament, May 21st -27th. “Travis Pointe Country Club has been an excellent addition to the LPGA Tour, and we are honored to help celebrate the club’s 40th anniversary,” said LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan. “The course presents a great challenge to the world’s best players, not to mention the tremendous support we receive from the membership during the LPGA Volvik Championship. Here’s to many more years of great golf and a great partnership.”
Travis Pointe Country Club is not just a club, it is a community. It prides itself on offering both recreational and social events throughout the year to accommodate the needs and interests of their families.
Happy 40th Anniversary Travis Pointe Country Club, and cheers to the next 40 years of wonderful family traditions and memories.
