Police say Lodi Township resident Kent Charles Hyne, 57, shot and killed Kyle Luark, 27, of Redford, on Feb. 25, and then concealed the body on his Waters Road property.
Hyne has been arraigned on charges of concealing the death of an individual and disinterment and mutilation of a dead body, according to a press release issued by the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Hyne alleges he was defending himself when he shot Luark.
Luark’s mother told police she drove out to Hyne’s Waters Road property around 8 p.m. Wednesday because it was the last known location of her son, who’d been missing since Tuesday. She told police as she approached the home a man fired several shots. She fled and called police, according to the news release.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office press release says the body was found at Hyne’s property on the 4000 block of Waters Road, which would be just west of Wagner Road. Washtenaw County property records show Hyne owning two properties further west or the 4700 block and 4900 block of Waters Road, closer to Zeeb Road.
Hyne’s property on the 4900 block of Waters Road is listed as the address for Island Farms or IslandMed, a company specializing in the farming of naturally-fertilized cannabis. It’s also listed as the address of Island Construction, a company owned by Kent Hyne, according to a Linked-In page.
Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Derrick Jackson confirmed there was a marijuana growing operation on the site.
The Michigan Department of Correction’s website shows Kyle Christopher Luark, with the same date of birth as the deceased, as having been jailed nearly four years for eight breaking and entering-related offenses in Washtenaw and Livingston counties between 2011-2013.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
