The entire class of first graders met volunteers from The Generosity Project in the Pleasant Ridge Elementary cafeteria from 9-11 a.m. Nov. 21 for a service project to benefit the Humane Society of Huron Valley.
Over the previous three weeks, first-graders and their parents collected food, dog toys, and other pet supplies for donation to HSHV. They also read a book about generosity and had a lesson on the concept of being generous to those in need.
On the 21st, pupils created dog beds from fleece and put in knots on the fringe for each bed. Teacher Shannon Soenen said the project not only taught the children to be generous, but some of the children were learning how to tie knots for the first time.
All the supplies will be donated to HSHV, and Humane Society volunteers will stuff the dog beds the Pleasant Ridge pupils created. Some supplies will be used for dogs at the animal shelter, and others will be packaged and sent home in adoption kits for visitors who adopt dogs from HSHV.
