Softball Sweep for Lady Hornets
Saline's varsity softball team (17-1) swept a doubleheader at Dexter Monday.
Saline needed extra innings to beat Dexter, 5-3, in the opener, and then cruised to a 7-0 win in the nightcap.
Kristina Zalewski scattered eight hits and two walks while striking out nine in the opener.
Down 2-1, Katie Alexander smashed a two-run home run to give Saline the lead. The Hornets added a run in the fifth, but Dexter tied it in the bottom of the inning.
Playing "international" tie breaking rules, which have teams start extra innings with a runner on second, the Hornets put up two runs in the eighth. Zalewski slammed the door on Dexter.
Kaylee Harmon was 2-for-4 with double and run. Angel Schilke tripled. Laura Vaccaro went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Same Bruley had two hits in four trips to the plate.
Game two was far less dramatic.
Vaccaro had a monster game, combining with Zalewski on a three-hit shutout, while going 3-for-4 with two homeruns, a double and 5 RBI. Sam Bruley went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Chelsie Leathers went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
