The Saline football program continued to tune up for the fall season with a scrimmage against Birmingham Groves Tuesday.
After a series of situational drills, the two teams got down to the business of straight football. Saline outscored Groves 14-7 and looked like they were on the verge of scoring again when time expired.

The Hornets struck first when Monty Green intercepted an overthrown pass and returned it into Groves territory. A short time later, sophomore QB Larry Robinson tossed a flat pass out to Kyle Greenwood, who took advantage of a big block from Nick Patteri and ran into the end zone.
Groves replied with a touchdown on their next drive, using a lot of plays along the edges.
Saline went up 14-7 on its next drive. Robinson connected with Kolton Malinczak on a slant over the middle and Malinczak turned on the burners and shook a tackler for a long run after the catch. He was finally taken down inside the 10. Robinson swept into the end zone for Saline’s second touchdown.
Groves looked like they might score on their next possession, moving inside the Saline 10. But the Hornet defense came up with a big fourth-down stand to preserve the lead and get the ball back.
The Hornets have another scrimmage at home at 9:30 a.m., Thursday.
Saline kicks off the season against Chippewa Valley at 7 p.m., Aug. 29 at Wayne State University. Their first home game is at 7 p.m., Sept. 26 against Brantford Assumption, a Canadian school.
