Jay Starkey, Army Veteran, Taught Science in Saline Area Schools for 33 Years
Jay C. Starkey, 86, of Saline, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, February 2, 2019 with his family by his side.
Jay was born in Detroit on February 9, 1932 to Estel and Edna (Gerster) Starkey. He graduated from Redford High School. Jay received degrees in Science Education from Albion College and the University of Michigan.
Jay treasured his years of service in the United States Army especially in Berlin, 1954-1956. A kind and compassionate man, Jay was a science teacher at the Saline Area Schools for 33 years.
Jay was married to the love of his life Joan Austin for 55 years, and she survives. Together they raised Cara (Darrell) Chandler of Manchester and Brian (Dena) Starkey of Elko, NV. Jay and Joan have 6 grandchildren. Jay is also survived by his sister Barb Wellfare.
Jay was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Saline attending many mission trips and serving his Lord Jesus by helping those in need to know the love of Christ. He also had a love of traveling, hiking, and of wildlife.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Saline on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 3:00 P.M. with a meal to follow.
