Danny Poupore will be the lone Saline wrestler at the state championship at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Poupore, 49-2, lost in the 130-pound regional final to Joshua Edmont, 17-0, of Detroit Catholic Central.
Cade Gilless and Zachary Sabin also wrestled for Saline.
Poupore opened the day by defeating Livonia Franklin's Logan Evanchuk by tech fall. In the semifinal, Poupore defeated Southgate's Logan Palshan by tech fall. Poupore's loss in the regional final was just his second of the season.
Gilless, wrestling at 160, began the day by pinning Connor McAnalley in just 40 seconds. But Gilles was pinned in the second round. Needing a win to advance to the consolation finals and qualify for the state championship, Gilless lost a 9-7 decision to JaQuan Baker.
The strong sophomore finished the season with a 37-12 record and a district championship. He'll be back as a stronger, more experienced team leader next year.
Sabin, a sophomore wrestling at 215 pounds, lost his opening bout of the day. He bounced back to defeat Livonia Churchill's Matt Wilson by tech fall. Sabin needed a win again David Wilson to make the consolation finals and advance to the state tournament. Wilson won by pin. He finished the year at 26-13.
