Sunny Skies Help Attract Big Crowds to Saline Summerfest

Organizers were thrilled with attendance at Saline Summerfest Saturday.

Attendance was high throughout the day and into the evening, when 50 Amp Fuse took the main stage.

FC Saline’s new 3-on-3 soccer team brought scores of kids to Henne Field, where Saline Recreation, Saline Community Education and Saline Area Schools administration managed long lines of kids waiting to play in the jump house and inflatable obstacle course.

The Saline Street Machines, with 42 vehicles, enjoyed its highest participation in years. Chuck Dutcher won best in show for his 1940 Nash Lafayette.

Along South Ann Arbor Street, the large crowd kept face painters busy for hours on end. Nextdoor to Benny’s Bakery, Saline Area Firefighters, off to a slow start because of three emergency calls between 10 and 11 a.m., struggled to keep up with high demand at the chicken broil. There was a line 10-20 people deep for more than an hour and the chickens were sold out before 2 p.m. Proceeds from the sale will help the department purchase body armor for firefighters.

The Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic displayed a half-dozen new members and new uniforms at high noon – and they brought a big crowd with them.

“This is great,” said Art Trapp, a longtime organizer of Saline Summerfest. “This has been one of the greatest weekends we’ve ever had.”

Attendance was helped by the sunny skies and relatively mild temperatures during the day.

The crowds picked up in the evening when 50 Amp Fuse played.
