Baseball: Kiyabu Throws a No-Hitter, Huang Slams Bedford

Kellan Huang hit a grand slam in game one and Paul Kiyabu threw a no-hitter in game two as Saline defeated Bedford 14-0 and 10-0 Wednesday.

Saline improved to 12-0 in the SEC Red and can clinch the conference championship Monday at Skyline.

For the day, Saline pitchers gave up just one hit. A­­­ ball off the end of bat with two outs in the fifth inning of the first game prevented Saline from having no-hitters on both ends of the doubleheader.­­­

Danny Wiedmayer, who got the save in Monday’s 11-inning thriller, was the starter and winner of game one. He pitched four no hit, shut out innings. Weidmayer walked one and struck out four. Tyler Zmich pitched the fifth inning. He walked one and gave up a hit off the end of the bat. He struck out three.

Saline opened the scoring in the top of the third. Ryan Foley was hit by a pitch. With two out, Jake Finkbeiner walked. Sean O’Keefe drilled a double to rightfield, scoring two runs. Courtesy runner Jacob Ohren-Hoeft scored when Daniels doubled to the wall in rightfield.

Saline exploded for nine runs in the fourth.

After Huang walked and Weidmayer singled Sean Millspaugh singled to score two runs. Zach Schwartzenberger singled and Jake Finkbeiner walked to load the bases. O’Keefe walked to bring in one run. Daniels singled to center to make it 7-0. Ted Eppinga reached on an error to make it 8-0 and keep the bases full. With two strikes, Kellan Huang homered over the left-field fence to make it 12-0.

It was Huang’s second home run in as many weeks.

“It was an 0-2 pitch. I knew something hard was coming. I pulled my hands inside and put a good swing on it,” said Huang, who was glad to round the bases and see his teammates at home plate waiting for him. “It was really nice. I’ve been struggling at the plate recently and It’s nice seeing them support me.”

Saline added two runs in the fifth. Tristan Marion walked. Ethan Collick singled him home with a line drive single to rightfield. Joe Borowski doubled to center to score Collick.

Kiyabu pitched a five-inning no-hitter against Bedford in game two. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule when Saline scored its 10th run. Kiyabu walked one batter and struck out three.

O’Keefe homered, his eighth of the season, and drove in three runs.  Finkbeiner hit three doubles, drove in a run and scored two runs. Huang went 2-for-2 with a double. Danels was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Ohren-Hoeft and Schwartzenberger each hit a double and drove in a run.

Saline tagged Bedford for four runs in the first inning. Daniels drove in a run with a double, Borowski drove in two runs with a single and Borowski singled in a run. In the second inning, O’Keefe hit a 1-0 pitch over the left-field fence for a two-run homerun. In the bottom of the fourth, Finkbeiner doubled and scored on a single by O’Keefe. Saline added three more in the fifth. Ohren-Hoeft doubled to score Huang. Schwartzenberger doubled to score Ohren-Hoeft. Finkbeiner doubled to score Schwartzenberger and end the game. Saturday.

Saline improved to 23-1. The Hornets visit Hudsonville Saturday for two games.
