The Reason We Rally
RunTough is more than a fun community event — it’s a tradition rooted in love, remembrance, and purpose.
The event was created in honor of Chad Carr, who passed away in 2015 at the age of 5 after a brave fight against diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), the deadliest form of childhood cancer. The local Saline event takes place each year on the weekend of what would have been Chad’s birthday.
Chad was the grandson of former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr and the son of long-time Saline residents Jason and Tammi Carr. What began as a way to support the Carr family during Chad’s battle has since become a powerful movement. Over the past 12 years, RunTough has raised millions of dollars to fund critically needed research through the ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation, which the Carrs co-founded to honor Chad’s legacy and bring hope to families facing the same devastating diagnosis.
“It’s become more than a race — it’s a true celebration of Chad’s life and spirit,” said Tammi Carr. “It brings the entire community together in a way that’s joyful, meaningful, and full of love.”
