The Saline Area Senior Center is looking for local service groups and volunteers to help with the Meals on Wheels program.
Each weekday, meals are prepared for about 12 Saline area residents at the Saline Evangelical Home. The food is then delivered by volunteers to the homes of residents. The service is provided through a partnership between Evangelical Home and the Senior Center and is not federally funded. The purpose of the program is to positively affect the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the elderly, ill, and/or handicapped individual through the daily home delivery of a meal that is hot, nutritious, and well-balanced.
Laurie Shaw, who administers the Meals on Wheels program for the Saline Area Senior Center, is looking for service groups or church groups to take care of deliveries one day a week.
Currently, St. Andrew Church takes care of Monday deliveries and Saline Rotary Club volunteers for Tuesday’s routes.
“We like the idea of having a group take care of a day because it’s a lot easier to schedule. When you have 12 volunteers working each day, it can be difficult to schedule,” said Pam Molascon, Director of the Saline Area Senior Center.
The Meals on Wheels are divided into three routes: city, country “A,” and country “B.” It takes about an one hour to deliver food, depending on the route. Food is picked up at Saline Evangelical Homes between 11 and 11:30 a.m. each weekday.
The Saline Area Senior Center is also looking for individual drivers who may be able to sub in a pinch. Groups interested in helping should call Laurie Shaw at 429-9274.
