Why I Relay: Kristina Sitarski on why She's Joined Relay for Life

Saturday is the day when the Saline community fights back against cancer. The Saline Relay for Life is an important fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, which funds cancer research and program to help cancer patients and their supporters. But the Relay for Life is much more. It's a chance for people to remember loved ones they've lost, to share stories of victory with old friends and new, and to stand arm-in-arm against cancer.

Relay for Life activities, all at Henne Field on Bennett Street, begin with the Run for Your Life 5K at 9 a.m. Bark For Life, an event for people and their pooches, takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

The Relay for Life Opening Ceremony is at 3 p.m. A Surviviors Lap follows. The Luminaria, a remembrance of those lost, is at 9 p.m. The closing ceremony is at 10 p.m.

Team: Krissy's Cancer Crushers

Who are you relaying for:  I relay for myself, a two year cancer survivor. Irelay for my children who may carry the genetic mutation BRCA1 that puts them at high risk for developing certain types of cancers. I relay for all the cancer fighters that I have met in this battle that we fight. I relay for my loved ones and friends, who stood by me through it all. I relay for my community to advance cancer care and to save lives. I relay to fight back against cancer that has taken so much from me. 

Reason why you are relaying:  It's been nearly two years since I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer at 32 years old. I had two little kids to raise and my world was turned upside down. Life has never been the same and although my cancer is gone, there is still reconstructive surgeries, and scarring, and fear. What I want people to know is that families don't just magically heal once the cancer is gone. The scars are too deep. The American Cancer Society has programs that help support families and that is why it is so important to support community fundraising projects like theRelay for Life- support the survivors, support the families, and support research for a safer future for my kids and for yours.
