US Attorney Charges Bates With Unlawful Theft of Federal Funds
The preliminary exam for Glenn “Al” Bates, accused of stealing $150,000 from the United States Department of Veterans Administration, has been set for 1 p.m., Oct. 16.
On Oct. 9, the United State Attorney charged Bates with one count of unlawful theft of federal funds. The complaint was filed Oct. 13 in federal court in Detroit. The crime is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines or both.
Bates managed the canteen at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor from 2006 to 2013. An audit discovered nearly $500,000 missing from the canteen operations. According to the federal affidavit, Bates admitted to investigators that he took $150,000.
Bates, who wrote articles about Saline High School athletics for the Saline Post on a freelance basis, coached and kept stats for various Saline High School sports teams.
