Student Count Up Slightly At Saline Area Schools

Saline Area Schools enrollment is up by about 10 students for the 2014-15 year.

Oct. 7 was "count day" for Michigan public schools. The state funds its public schools on a per pupil basis  based on numbers tallied during "count days."

Saline Area Schools Superintendent Scot Graden said enrollment increased from 5,238 to 5,248. Graden said the district budgeted for flat enrollment. The district's financial budget should be unaffected.

Graden said the district accepted 72 "schools of choice" students from other districts. Last year, the district accepted 75 students from outside the district. Graden said the eight percent of the district's student body lives outside the district. The district has a policy capping that number at 10 percent.

The "count day" tallies are preliminary. Graden said they may fluctuate over the next 10 days.

According to a report on Mlive, enrollment is up by 350 students at Ann Arbor Public Schools. The same report said several Washtenaw County school districts experienced falling enrollment.

Saline Area Schools continues to graduate very large classes while enrolling smaller kindergarten classes. The district is using its schools of choice policy to stabilize enrollment and its budget.
