Frost, Rogers Lead Lady Hornet Swim & Dive Past Ypsi

The Saline girls swim and dive team took care of business against Ypsilanti Thursday night at Saline High School.

The final result was what one might expect when one of the top teams in the state competes against a program trying to find its legs.

Saline won 153-32. The Lady Hornets capture the top three places or better in every individual event and finished first and second or better in every relay.

Kate Rogers and Maddy Frost were double winners for Saline. Rogers won the 200-yard IM and 500-yard freestyle. Frost won the 100-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle.

The meet began with Frost, Hannah Lau, Serena Yan and Melissa Aben winning the 200-yard medley in 1:54.86.

Senior Melanie Schroeder won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.73 to earn the D1 cut.  Amelia Grant-Armstrong, Allison Eppinga and Emily McCullough gave Saline the top four positions in the race.

Rogers won the 200-yard IM in 2:10.65, earning the D1 cut. Cristina Czyrka (2nd, 2:14.17) and Emily Lau (3rd, 2:15.58) also made D1 cuts. Freshman Therese Larson was fourth.

Frost won the 50-yard freestyle event in 24.77 and earned the D1 cut. Hannah Lau (2nd,  26.33), Melissa Aben (3rd, 26.91) and Sam Winchester (4th, 28.79) scored for Saline.

Freshman Miranda Eberle continued to her impressive diving season. She scored 222.4 points to win the event. Nikki Kermath (2nd, 192.10) and Caitlin Cunningham (3rd, 161.85) also scored for Saline.

Serena Yan won the 100-yard butterfly, making the D1 cut in 59.93 seconds. Grant-Armstrong (2nd, 1:01.18), Kelsey Holmberg (3rd, 1:04.93) and Aben (4th, 1:05.15) completed Saline’s scoring.

Hannah Lau won the 100-yard freestyle in 56.90 second, edging Czyrka by .10 seconds. Samantha Fox was third (59.24).

Rogers made the D1 cut while winning the 500-yard freestyle. She finished in 5:14. Erika Glatz (2nd, 5:18.80), Alex McPherson (3rd, 5:21.80) and Olivia McKelvey (4th, 5:30.22) scored for the Hornets.

Grant-Armstrong, Czyrka, Winchester and Sam Tommelleo won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:48.48.

Maddy Frost won the 100-yard backstroke in 58.63 seconds to make the D1 cut. Eppinga also made her D1 cut, finishing in 1:00.92. Schroeder (3rd, 1:01.98) and Yan (4th, 1:02.70) finished Saline’s scoring.

Emily Lau won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.80. Larson (2nd, 1:13.76), Sophie Brightman (3rd, 1:14.55) and Ariana Brown (4th, 1:15.35) also swam for Saline.

The Hornets finished the event with Rogers and Frost and the freshmen Eppinga and Grant-Armstrong capturing the 400-yard freestyle in 3:40.70 to earn the D1 cut. Saline’s teams took the top four positions in the relay event.
