Distracted Driving Blamed for Rollover Crash That Injured Driver on Willis Road

Saline police believe distracted driving was the cause of a crash that injured a 29-year-old woman on Willis Road early Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency workers were dispatched to the 400 block of Willis Road around 12:15 p.m. They found a Buick Lacrosse on its side, several feet away from a parked Ford Edge it struck.

Police Chief Jerrod Hart said the Tecumseh woman was westbound on Willis Road.

"According to her, she was looking down at her phone for directions and veered off the roadway and hit a parked car," Hart said.

The woman was transported to an area hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Hart said she will be issued traffic citations as a result of the crash.

"We've very thankful nobody was loading groceries out of the back of that Ford Edge," Hart said.

Hart said the crash is a reminder to keep your eyes on the road.

"Distracted driving is huge. It is taking your eyes off the road. We all have that responsibility to ourselves and others when we're operating vehicles," Hart said.

The Saline Area Fire Department and Huron Valley Ambulance also responded to the crash.

The owner of the Ford Edge said her daughters heard the crash. She said her neighbor's children are often playing in their front yard.

Down the road, a couple of neighborhood parents complained of the constant speeders on Willis Road.

"My friend's a police officer. I told him if he ever wanted to meet is quota (for speeding tickets), just park in a driveway and catch them as they drive by," he said, noting that it gets worse when school is in session.

The Saline Police Department does currently have a speed sign on Willis Road. The sign tells drivers how fast they are going and flashes at them when they are speeding.
