The Saline Area Schools district held its "Schools of Choice" lottery Monday.
Superintendent Scot Graden said there were 138 applications from out-of-district families who want to send their children to Saline schools. Graden said that number is consistent with what the district has seen in the past.
Graden reiterated the district's position schools of choice.
"We use the process to manage enrollment. Our goal is to make sure we do not lose enrollment this year," Graden told the Saline Board of Education during administrative remarks Tuesday. "It's a very challenging year for us to predict."
In Michigan, school districts are largely funded by the state on a per-pupil basis.
There were 26 applicants at Saline High School and 44 applicants at the kindergarten level.
The district has begun reaching out to families who've qualified to come to Saline schools through schools of choice. Those families have until June 26 to enroll their children in Saline schools..
Graden said the lottery was filmed.
The district has a policy that limits the number of schools of choice students to 10 percent of the total school population. The district had previously said it hoped to add a minimum of 64 students and up to 132 students using the program this year.
