Track and Field: Hunt, 800 Relay Team Capture Regional Titles

Saline ophomore Lauryn Hunt won the 400-meter dash and helped the 800-meter relay team to victory as the Saline girls finished third at the MHSAA track and field.

Saline finished with 85.5 points, behind Skyline, 103, and champion Pioneer, 142.

Hunt, who won the 100, 200 and 400 meter races at the SEC meet, won the 400 meter dash in 57.66 seconds, to beat Skyline’s Zsofia Hull by nearly two seconds. Hunt joined Emily Cook, Amera Boyd and Suzanne Chuparkoff on the 800 relay team, which won in 1:45.64. Hunt also qualified for the state meet in the 200-meter dash, finishing second in 25.76 seconds.

Saline’s 3200-meter relay team also punched its ticket to the state meet. Even without senior distance runner Jessi Larson, who didn’t run due to injury, the team finished third in 9:41.52 – beating the qualifying time by nearly 2.5 seconds. Emma Cummings, Kayla Fortino, Rebecca Cantrell and Ella Woehlke ran for Saline.

Several Hornets figured into the scoring. Amera Boyd was fifth in the 200 meters (27.61). Chuparkoff was fifth in the 400 (1:03.33). Cantrell (4th, 2:22.77), Cummings (7th, 2:27.29) and Woehlke (8th, 2:27.67) scored in the 800. Katherine Clark (7th, 5:34.29) and Abigail Wilson (8th, 5:39.22) scored in the 1600. Fortino was fourth in the 3200 (11:18.52).

Cook was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.68) and 300-meter hurdles (48.76). SEC high jump champion Sloane Pepper finished third on Friday, clearing 4-10. Charlotte Peterson was seventh in pole vault (9-03).

Hunt, Chuparkoff, Boyd and Emily Eitzman were third in the 1600 meter relay (4:13.18). Cook, Boyd, Greta Downey and Chuparkoff were fifth in the 400 relay.
