HISTORIC SALINE HOME: Annin-Peoples Home on the Market for $225,000

One of Saline’s most celebrated historic homes is on the market.

The Annin-Peoples house, located at 218 S. Monroe St., was listed on the market this week by Reinhart Realtors for a fraction of the of the $799,000 price it fetched in 2004.

The four-bedroom, 3360-square-foot Italianate brick home was built in 1863 by Joseph Annin. Over the years it was home to builder Harvey Bennett, banker John Hull and the Peoples family. It was rumored to have been a safehouse on the “Underground Railroad.” Another legend has it that President Abraham Lincoln stopped at the home on his way to Jackson, Michigan.  A Dec. 1, 1976 Saline Reporter story by Wendy Blackie reported the existence of an etching in a wooden beam the home’s attic. It read, “Abraham Lincoln -- Saline, Michigan - August 23, 1963.

The home is listed at $225,000.

That’s not a typo, according to Reinhart agents Darby Kolano and Rick Mangan.

“The price reflects the amount of work needed in the home,” Kolano wrote in an email.

Kolano said the house is structurally sound. Support beams have been added in the basement. A roof was put on the main section of the home in 2006. The roof on the back section of the home needs replacing.

Whoever buys the home will share a driveway with the residents of the new condos that are being built behind the historic home.

Kolano said there haven’t been tenants in the home for some time.

She said there has been much interest in the home.
