Saline Hires Maciag as New Building Inspector

The City of Saline hired a new building inspector at Monday’s city council meeting.

Council voted 7-0 to hire Steve Maciag, conditioned upon a background check and physical and drug screening.

Maciag is currently employed as a building inspector for McKenna Associates, working in Ecorse, Birmingham and Inkster. Prior to working for McKenna, he owned his own home improvement company for 30 years. The Trenton resident is licensed by the State of Michigan to work as a code official and inspector.

Maciag, one of four candidates for the job, will make $58,932 annually, and receive health insurance, life insurance, 12 paid holidays, and a MERS hybrid pension.

“I’m excited to come work for Saline. I do like what I’ve seen so far. Any issues that come up, I’ll be happy to address them,” Maciag told city council.

Councillor Dean Girbach told Maciag he wants him to work with his “eyes wide open.”

Councillor Janet Dillon questioned why Maciag would receive six months of severance pay. City Manager Todd Campbell said it was standard for non-union city staff.

Mayor Brian Marl said that he was also opposed to the severance pay policy and after briefly consulting council said he’d hoped council would soon address that issue.

After Taylor Tillman retired the city considered outsourcing building department duties. Council opted to keep the service in-house.
