Hornet Track Team Wins Every Event in Dual Meet Against Huron

Saline defeated Huron 130-7 in what was very nearly not a dual track and field meet Tuesday.

The Hornets won every individual race, every relay and every field event. In fact, Saline athletes finished 1-2-3 in all but three events.

Coach Allan Leslie said it wasn’t Saline’s goal to win in such convincing fashion.

“We don’t come out here to run up the score. But we’ve got work to do. Suddenly, it’s May and we’re trying to get ready for some big meets,” Leslie said.

Leading the way for Saline were Joey Leptich, who won the 110 meter hurdles and 300 hurdles, and John Smutny, who won the shot put and discus.

In the sprints, Saline had the four fastest runners. Gabe Becton won the meet in 11.16 seconds. Tyler Palka (11.35) and Jesse Ouellete (11.52) rounded out the top three.

“Our sprinters have really been a bright spot lately,” Leslie said.

Mitchell Suddendorf won the 200 dash in 23.50, edging Christian Slattery and Tyler Bredemitz.

Ryan Gauche won the 400 in 51.24. Skyler Bowden and Chris Slattery finished second and third.

Andrew Kitto won the 800 meters by nearly 10 seconds, finishing in 2:01.83. He was followed by freshmen Brian Blankenship and Austin Welch.

Grant Praschan won the 1600 meter event (4:37.39). He was followed by Brian Diefenbach and Dylan Jennings.

Anthony Lamus won the 3200 meter event in 10:04.03. John Dolsen was third in 10:20.23.

Leptich won the 110 hurdles in 16.73. Hunter Krebs and Alexander Mepham finished second and third.

Leptich won the 300 hurdles in 43.12. He was followed in by freshmen Josiah Davis and Derek Jordan.

In the field, Smutny won both throwing events. He won discus with a throw of 136-06. Kadri Hussein and Nic Sawyer finished second and third. Smutny won the shot put in 49-07.75. Sawyer and Chase Campbell finished second and third.

Kaj Althaus won the pole vault again, clearing 13 feet. Vince Olsen was second (12 feet). Tristen Clark was third.

Junior Brad McCormick won long jump with a leap of 20-04. Vince Olsen jumped 19-02.5 to take second.

Alexander Mepham won the high jump by clearing 5-08. Joey Leptich also cleared 5-08 but finished third.  Jacob Liebert also cleared 5-08.
