Hornet LAX Wins a Thriller Over Flint Powers

The Saline varsity boys’ lacrosse team won a shootout against Flint Powers Catholic School, 15-14, at Saline High School Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (3-2) were never behind, but the Chargers (2-2) battled to say close.

Nick Karapas’ fourth goal of the contest, with 2:27 to play, proved to be the game winner for Saline. The Chargers scored with 1:20 to play to make it 15-14.

Saline won the crucial faceoff and then won two ground balls to maintain possession in the final minute to clinch the game.

Karapas finished the game with four goals on 12 shots. He also had an assist. Tommy Hickey finished with three goals and three assists. He also picked up four ground balls.

“I credit our team for how hard we competed. This was a physical game and we were tough. But we made some uncharacteristic mistakes and left guys wide open in front of our goal,” said Saline head coach Matt Ceo.

Though goalie Tyler Cowen allowed 14 goals, he played well, making 11 saves in the second half, including six in the fourth quarter.

“Most of those goals he allowed were from guys wide open right in front. Tyler made big saves for us today and we needed every single save he made,” Ceo said.

Hickey said it was a tough game that Saline worked hard to win.

“It was a physical game and we paid the price to win a lot of battles for ground balls today,” Hickey said.

Hickey said the Hornets, who’d lost a couple close games and won two by blowouts, needed to win a tight game.

Sean Corcoran led the Hornets with six ground balls to go along with his goal and two assists. Mark Hoffman scooped up three ground balls.

Also scoring for Saline was Sam Ozminkowski, who tallied three times, Rimmer DeVries, who scored twice, Brett Braun and Brian Behsley.

The Hornets play South Lyon Monday.

Ceo said the South Lyon might be the top team in the region.

“We’re going to have to play better than we did today,” Ceo said.
