SASC Recorder Ensemble Brings Musicians Together
Studying music at any age has numerous benefits. It’s not too often you see a group of older adults come together to form an ensemble, but lifelong educator, Felix Chow, felt there was a need. In 2021 he formed Saline Area Senior Center’s (SASC) Recorder Ensemble.
“Initially, I was hoping that there were recorder players in Saline to form an ensemble where people like myself can get together and play for fun. It turned out that there were more people who are beginners and want to learn to play the recorder.”
Along with Felix, you’ll hear retired music teacher, Joan Starkey on recorder, dulcimer, and piano, David Hubbard on guitar, and recorder players Margaret Bradley, Becky Glesner, Sandra Harewood, Calvin Kaufmann, Debbie Knoedler, and Heidi Mercado.
Felix is thrilled with how the group has evolved. “Music, similar to dancing, is one of those essentials in life as people age. The skills learned help people to stay healthy mentally and physically.”
Program Coordinator Megan Kenyon loves helping to foster this love of learning for older adults. “On a personal note, I majored in music in college for a while, so folks learning music is dear to my heart. I especially love to see older adults trying to learn a new instrument. They have worked so hard. Music is like a foreign language, so it can be tough, but our members are tough and determined. I know that Debbie and Heidi were completely new to music, so it’s been very cool to see seniors take on this challenge.
Felix encourages the Recorder Ensemble by having the group perform a few times a year. It allows them to practice and work toward a common goal. Newcomers are always welcome to check out the group, they meet Mondays at 1pm.
“My philosophy for adult learners is that they play for fun, not for achievement. It is the joy of music for them to play and for the audience to listen. It is not the technical difficulties or perfection as the target for most musicians would strive for.”
The Recorder Ensemble’s upcoming concert is Friday, October 27, 2-3pm at SASC. All are welcome to attend. Please register by calling 734-429-9274.
